Math Test TOMORROW!

keep-calm-and-pass-your-math-test

Tomorrow we will have our Decimal Ops Unit test.  Students have studied and are continuing to practice these skills.  Please use the Study Guide, sent home last week and posted in Google Classroom, to help your student to study for this big test.

Any student who scores an 8 on this test (a PERFECT score) will be excused from math homework for the remainder of the year!

Thank you!

The Game of Life – Math Style

IMG_0909Today in math we practiced adding and subtracting decimals while having a ton of fun!  We played the Game of Life (like the board game) but we made it real.  Students had to track their spending and earning habits in their checkbook.  They are bringing them home today, so be sure to ask to see it.  The bad cop came around and gave out fines as they were playing.  They also had Pay Day – don’t we ALL love Pay Day!  The kids sure did, because then they had more money to spend on their “stuff”.  What a great learning opportunity!

Here’s a quick video showing some of the learning in progress:  https://animoto.com/play/ckjDie2uX1MlYQvwJeo5gA

Estimating Decimals

image

Hello families,

We are estimating decimals in our latest math unit. We made a page in our ISN. It held a lot of valuable information including the steps we should use when we estimate. Then today we worked through three situations that were real world based. Students estimated carpet prices, helped budget for a bicycle, and planned for party food. We are really strengthening these estimating skills!

How to create a histogram

Tonight students will be asked to create a histogram.  Please watch this video to help in the creation process.  The second problem on the homework is a bar graph – NOT a histogram.  The histogram for #1 and the bar graph for #2 should go on the BACK of the homework sheet.

Stem and Leaf and Gummy Fun!

Today, as we continued learning how to create Stem and Leaf plots and interpret what they tell us, we were able to have a little bit of Gummy Bear fun!  Ask you student to show you the paper we worked through as we enjoyed our bears.

Stem and Leaf Plots

Tonight for homework students are working on interpreting and understanding Stem and Leaf plots.  Here is a video in case they need some support with the homework.

Any handymen (or women) out there?

Hello families,

Sixth grade is always looking for opportunities to include YOU – the families – into what is happening in our world.  So are any of you handy?  Do you have a love of power tools?  Then we have a volunteer opportunity for you!  We are in need of 5 document camera stands (built out of PVC pipe).  It is a lot easier than it sounds, we promise!  Here is a video showing how to build the basic stand:

What do you think?  Do you think that you would be willing to make five of these for the sixth grade staff?  We will buy you all of the materials (the pvc pieces and the glue) if you would provide the labor and the tools.  Reach out to Mrs. Alvarnaz via email for details!  Thank you so much for your support!  It is truly appreciated.
