Hang on tight — due dates are coming!

Believe it or not, the end of the year is right around the corner! Due dates come along with that, so get ready! We will be working on finishing up Esperanza Rising (ER), a final novel project, and narratives. The following are the due dates that will be occurring throughout the month of May:

May 2: ER Las Ciruelas word work and reader response questions due

May 4: ER Las Papas work work and reader response questions due

May 6: ER Los Aguacates work work and reader response questions due

May 9: ER Los Esparragos word work and reader response questions due

May 11: ER Los Duraznos word work and reader response questions due

May 13: ER Las Uvas work work and reader response questions due

May 16: Entire Esperanza Rising packet (EVERYTHING completed), due

May 27: Esperanza Rising novel project due

May 30: Final narrative due

Students WILL be getting time to work on these things during class. However, it is up to them whether or not they use their time wisely. Regardless, they will probably need to be working on these assignments at home as well and they will need to take the initiative and responsibility to do that. Please encourage them as you see them working on these things (But do not do it for them!). The students are very capable and I’m sure that in the end all of their hard work will turn out wonderfully!frog

The Game of Life – Math Style

IMG_0909Today in math we practiced adding and subtracting decimals while having a ton of fun!  We played the Game of Life (like the board game) but we made it real.  Students had to track their spending and earning habits in their checkbook.  They are bringing them home today, so be sure to ask to see it.  The bad cop came around and gave out fines as they were playing.  They also had Pay Day – don’t we ALL love Pay Day!  The kids sure did, because then they had more money to spend on their “stuff”.  What a great learning opportunity!

Here’s a quick video showing some of the learning in progress:  https://animoto.com/play/ckjDie2uX1MlYQvwJeo5gA

Estimating Decimals

image

Hello families,

We are estimating decimals in our latest math unit. We made a page in our ISN. It held a lot of valuable information including the steps we should use when we estimate. Then today we worked through three situations that were real world based. Students estimated carpet prices, helped budget for a bicycle, and planned for party food. We are really strengthening these estimating skills!

Guatemala

GUATEMALA4

Hola,

We started a new unit during the week in the Spanish class, featuring Guatemala. The main theme: “las compras/shopping”.

Attached the vocabulary list we will focus along the unit.VOCABULARIO UNIDAD 3- GUATEMALA. Also, in this unit we will have the opportunity:

-to explore Guatemala’s culture and geography.

-to practice the learned numbers in Spanish  from past units (0 to 100) and to learn new ones (100s to million) in order to use when shopping in Spanish.

-to talk about shopping ->  by expressing likes and dislikes.

-to use time schedules learned from past units.

-to describe and compare clothing, footwear and stores’ location.

-to speak when shopping (including sell/ buy/negotiate sales).

Hasta pronto, Señora Rivera.GUATEMALA1

Earth Day with “The Lorax”

Today the students participated in Reader’s Theater with “The Lorax”. They did a great job of adding tone and mood to their different parts! Afterwards, we watched a bit of the original cartoon movie based on the book, and they did some comparing and contrasting between the book and the movie. For their exit ticket, the students were asked to write what they thought the message of “The Lorax” was, and they had some great responses ranging from comments on deforestation to taking care of what you already have. Such a fun class!

Missing books!

Oh, no! My classroom library is looking REALLY sparse! Over 40 books are gone! I have some new books I would love to put out, but I can’t do that until we figure out what happened to these missing books! As we are nearing the end of the school year (believe it or not), these books need to be found and returned immediately. With your student, please check in your home, in their room, in their book bags, etc. to find these books! Also, expect to see citation notices come home for those books that were signed out but never returned. Thank you for helping to keep the classroom library full and available!
