What is happening in the Spanish class….?

We are finishing the unit where the students learned in Spanish how to introduce themselves and others, describe themselves as well as other people, say how they feel, and talk about family relationships.

Along the unit we continue to understand and talk about some cultural aspects of life in Mexico. Our last project for this unit consists in making a ¨Digital Tourist Poster¨where the students will research about the main features of a place in Mexico (its climate, traditions, museums, landscape, activities,  food, handcrafts, etc.).  Based on the information the students researched, they will create a ¨Digital Tourist Poster¨ inviting tourists to visit the place. Attached, the project´s instructions and requirements. PROYECTO POSTER TURíSTICO Instrucciones…

We are STUDYING!

Hello families,

Have you heard that we have a math test on Wednesday?  I HOPE SO!  Today we continued to prepare for Wednesday’s test.  We played a Super Hero Relay and we practiced ALL of the great skills we have learned in Unit 4.  We will continue the activity tomorrow in hopes of continuing to build some AMAZING Super Heroes!

What a fun time and what a competitive bunch of sixth graders!

Reading Logs

For those of you who may not know, York Academy is working towards a reading goal for the end of the year. If we meet our goal, Dr. Lowe will be sleeping on the roof! However, it’s already February and we are less than halfway there. As you are aware, M-Th students are required to read for at least 20 minutes and then write a response to their reading. I provide students with reading logs at the beginning of the week for this purpose. The students and I have had MANY conversations about what to do if they lose that log. The main solutions are:

1. Get another log out of the “extras” folder located in my classroom.

2. Write your response on a blank piece of paper. These responses can be summaries, predictions, questions, or simply sharing how the events of the book make them feel.

The students all know these options, and know them well!

If your student is reading for more than 20 minutes per night (Fantastic!), they can simply write how many minutes they read in the margins of their reading log.

Happy reading 🙂

PAW-Journey of a Snowflake

This week’s paragraph(s)-a-week ties in winter weather, figurative language devices, and narrative! The assignment does include a bit of research and some factual elements; a website for the students to use can be found on the PAW prompt page. Students have been told that if they do not have internet access at home, they can research the website during study hall or during a homeroom time frame. Their research notes, rough draft, and final draft are due on Friday (no homework passes). Many of the students really like writing stories, so I’m anxious to see their ingenuity with this PAW! Math Test Prep

Hello families,

As you are aware, next Wednesday students will have their Unit 4 math test.  Today all students will be bringing home a study guide with some problems for them to practice.   This is not an assignment, it is simply meant to be a study tool.  It will not be collected or graded!

Also, as a support, I would like to provide you with some video links for some of the more challenging skills.  Please reach out through email or Dojo if you need any more support.  Thank you!

Math – Creativity Project Homework

Hello families,

Tonight for homework students are to tap into their CREATIVE side!  Students are to pick one (or more) of the topics from our Unit 4 math material.  Topics include:

1.  Area

2.  Perimeter

3.  Triangles

4.  Parallelograms

5.  Coordinate Plane

6.  Surface Area

7.  Volume

Once they decide their topic – then it is time to get creative!  They are to do SOMETHING to share in class tomorrow that will teach the topic to the rest of the class.  Maybe they decide to write new lyrics to a favorite pop song, maybe they write a poem, create a poster, make a game, show a skit – there are SO MANY GREAT IDEAS!  A cheer, a chant, a rap, a comic strip!  Wow!!  What will they do?

I am looking forward to sharing time tomorrow.  We will be video taping the presentations.  I can’t wait to see what our geniuses create!!!

Have a wonderful night!

Graffiti Walls

We used “graffiti walls” in class today to show what helping verbs are and what they do, give examples of helping verbs on their own/in a verb phrase/in a sentence, and share tips about how to locate them in sentences! The students really got into it and the finished product is awesome!

Studying VOLUME!

And no, that does not refer to how loud we could be!

Today we moved from Surface Area to VOLUME.  Volume is defined as the number of cubic units that will fit into a 3D shape.  As a fun way to explore volume students build 3D shapes out of marshmallows and had to determine the length, width and height of each figure.  We saw a lot of great work happening!

We had a ton of fun as we explored the formula for finding the volume of these marshmallow shapes.

On a side note, we have 15 students already signed up for Study Jam!  That’s AWESOME!  If you were on the fence about whether or not to come, please sign up!  We are going to be REALLY prepared for our test on Wednesday and this Study Jam will (hopefully) push us over the top.

PAW — Snow Day!

Given the recent weather events, this week’s PAW prompt is about a snow day! Hopefully the students will be able to draw from their own experiences to create a great writing piece! The PAW is due in class on Friday; reminder that homework passes are not accepted for these assignments! Click the link below to view the prompt.
