Argumentative Essay

argument

We started an argumentative essay writing project today! As you can tell from our anchor chart, argumentative writing is MEATY. We will be breaking it down into parts so that the students truly understand the steps they need to take to create a powerful argument in writing.

The argument topic: Should school start later for middle school students? Surprisingly, many students picked “con” (which is “no, school SHOULDN’T start later). Interesting…We’ll see which side they firmly decide to argue after they’ve done some research.

This project will prepare students for the argumentative essays they will write  and use for the classroom debate concerning the kingdoms of Dictionopolis and Digitopolis in Phantom Tollbooth.

Several students made the comment: “This’ll be good for me. I like to argue.”

Let the fun begin!

Math Homework on 1/6/16

Hello families,

Tonight’s math homework is a fun way for students to practice their area of a triangle skills.  It is in a program called Quizizz.  I have sent directions home with each student as to how to log in to the site, but I am also putting that information here in case it was misplaced on the way home.

Homework:

  1. Open http://join.quizizz.com in your browser
  2. Enter the 5-digit game code 03582, and click “Proceed”
  3. Now enter your name and click “Join Game!”
  4. You will get an avatar, and then see a “Start Game” button. Click it to begin!

Students will want to have scrap paper and a pencil and maybe a calculator with them so that they can work through the problems.  They are welcome to complete it more than one time if they would like to try to improve their score.  Have fun!!

Area and Perimeter of Triangles

Hello students and families,

By looking at the homework from Monday, I believe our students do not yet understand how to find the area or perimeter of a triangle.  If you feel that your student is still struggling with that or if you noticed that they didn’t do well on the homework from last night please take a moment and watch this video with your student:

We will be continuing with area and perimeter of triangles throughout the rest of this week and we will end with a quiz on Friday so please take the time to review our class notes and our vocabulary.

Thank you!

Classroom Needs

Hello families,

Cold season is upon us – the sniffles, sneezes, and coughing has begun!

Our classrooms are in need of hand sanitizer and tissues.  If you are able to provide any, they would be greatly appreciated by the kids and the teachers!  Let’s prevent the spread of these nasty bugs!

Thank you in advance!

Winter is here!

Well, it seems that Old Man Winter has finally arrived!  Did you feel it?

As a reminder, students will often be going outside for recess or even for dismissal.  It is COLD.  Please remember to send your student bundled in warm outerwear including scarves, hats, and mittens or gloves.  Coats should also be cold weather appropriate.

Let’s keep our kids healthy and warm!

Reading Logs

Happy New Year! As students are in sixth grade now, just turning in a list of days that they read isn’t enough anymore. The logs and responses are “evidence” that the students are reading AND thinking about what they are reading. Reading logs for the students will be different, starting this week. Though they do not require a parent/guardian signature anymore, please make sure your student is indeed doing their reading and responding Monday-Thursday, and check out the new format and expectations!
