Context Clue Dominoes!

The Phantom Tollbooth is chock-full of fantastic vocabulary, which is wonderful! However, we need to brush up on our context clue skills so that we don’t always have to read the book with a dictionary nearby (though dictionaries are pretty great, too). To that end, we spent yesterday working with a context clue anchor chart and playing context clue dominoes in small groups to practice. The students had a great time with this, and did so well!

Central America Map

There seems to be some confusion on the new map for social studies.  Students are responsible for all countries in Central America, I put the lines on smaller countries to make sure students do not forget them.  The complete list of countries needed for this map are

Canada

USA

Mexico

Guatemala

Honduras

El Salvador

Belize

Costa Rica

Panama

Nicaragua

Preparing for Monday’s Math Test

Hello families and students,

As you are aware, on Monday students will have a Unit 3 math test for all of the material covered so far in this unit.  It will include the following topics:

1.  Adding fractions

2.  Subtracting fractions

3.  Simplifying fractions

4.  Changing improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa

5.  Multiplying fractions

I have requested that students spend 20 minutes per night studying to prepare for Monday’s test.  They are also being offered the opportunity to earn extra credit points.  The extra credit can be earned by completing any of the following pages:

Worksheet 5

Worksheet 4

Worksheet 3

Worksheet 2

Worksheet 1

Each of these will allow them to practice the skills that will be on the test on Monday.  You can also scroll through the blog to find very valuable math videos that have been posted.  Students could re-watch the videos to help them with the skills they are still confused about.  If you need any specific videos or tools, don’t hesitate to ask!

Have a wonderful Thursday!

Multiplying fractions 12.2.15

Hello families and students,

Tonight you will be multiplying mixed numbers for homework.  If you forget how to change a mixed number into an improper fraction just think of my backwards C.  Start with the denominator, multiply it by the whole number and then add the numerator.  That becomes your new numerator!  Then keep the denominator the same.  Easy!

You should also have your ISN with you tonight.  You need to study for Monday’s TEST!!  The test will cover adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions.

Here is a video showing how to multiply mixed numbers in case you needed some review:

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  I will be available during lunch recess to help you study if you need the help!

Happy Wednesday!

Homework 12.1.15

Spanish – Worksheet

Relative Pronouns: Who/Whom

We had a lesson concerning relative pronouns today, and part of the students’ homework tonight involves relative pronouns. Figuring out whether to use “who” or “whom” can be tricky; hopefully the video below will help students learn a mnemonic device to help them figure out which is more appropriate!

Multiplying Fractions 12.1.15

Hello families and students,

Today we started multiplying fractions!  Unfortunately for the students I made them THINK!  We can’t just learn the steps, we have to learn the thinking BEHIND the steps (why we do what we do).  Here is the video we used to help us understand the process.

After viewing the video and beginning to understand the process behind the multiplication we did some beautiful window art!  Check it out!

2015-12-01 08.50.47

What a great visual!  Tonight’s homework related to this exact same process.  The students need to draw out at least 6 of the problems like the brownie pan method video shows towards the end.  They can simply multiply the rest of the problems.

Tomorrow we will be creating an ISN page about multiplying fractions.  We will have a quiz on adding, subtracting and multiplying on Monday, December 7.  Please study your notes so that you will be prepared!
