We have started a new unit focusing on the identification and description of physical features, personalities, expressing possession, emotions, interests and family relationships. Along the unit, we will continue to explore cultural aspects from Mexico  and Mexican artists like Frida Kahlo  and their artwork.

Let your creativity roll! We will have fun integrating and practicing what is learned in four projects:

  • Make an “Acrostic” (Describing yourself in Spanish).
  • Make a family album.
  • Research and oral presentation in Spanish about a Mexican artist and his/her artwork.
  • Making a poster of one of the following events using information from the internet.

*A guided visit to a Mexican historic site (una visita guiada)

*A concert.

*An Indian embroidery exhibition (Cultural exposure)

Projects’ due dates, instructions and rubrics to be posted soon.

In the meantime, you may practice the learned verb to be “ser” and the subject pronouns/”pronombres personales” with the following online Spanish grammar game:

PAW — Making a Discovery

Using the discovery of King Tut’s tomb as an example, students will be writing about a discovery they have made for this writing assignment. In addition to the options for this stipulated on the assignment paper, I am also allowing the students to create a fictional narrative about making a discovery, if they so choose. The requirements for this writing assignment are listed on the paper, encourage the students to follow through! I can’t wait to see what they come up with for Wednesday!

Shopping Cart Mystery

We had so much fun in class today! We participated in a lesson titled “Shopping Cart Mystery” that gave the students practice in using their inferring skills. Each “shopping” cart had different items in it. Students had to record their observations about each cart (using full sentences, of course!) and then make their inference about who the shopper was/what the shopper was doing/where the shopper was going. After making their inference, they had to support their reasoning. The students got to move around the room to get to each “cart” and collaborate with peers throughout the activity. They were making some fantastic inferences :-).

Field Trip Tomorrow

Tomorrow we will be walking to The Strand for the Young Person’s Concert Gershwin’s Magic Key.  Please take some time tonight to speak with your child about appropriate field trip behavior and respect while on the walking trip.  We are looking forward to an AMAZING day with our sixth graders.  They are growing up and as young adults they will need to show how mature and responsible they are.  Thank you for taking time to encourage these good behaviors at home.
